Definitions

Primary Services

Primary health relates to professional health care received in the community, usually from your GP or practice nurse. Primary health care provides an entry point to the health system, delivers core medical and preventative care and helps patients co-ordinate and integrate their care.

Secondary Services
Waitemata DHB provides a range of secondary health services to its population, these are services that primary providers refer their patients to predominantly to receive Hospital based care for people living within the catchment of WDHB. These include: Adult Health Services, Child Woman and Family Services, Home and Older Adult Services and Mental Health Services.

Tertiary Services
Tertiary health services are generally provided from one site or facility and service a whole region of the country or the whole country. Examples of Tertiary services include the burns unit at Middlemore Hospital and some Paediatric services run from Starship Hospital.

Definitions

Non Government Organisation (NGO)

A Non Government Organisation is created by natural or legal persons with no participation or representation of any government. In the cases in which NGOs are funded totally or partially by governments, the NGO maintains its non-governmental status therefore it excludes government representatives from membership in the organization.

An example of an health related NGO is the Heart Foundation, Cancer Society, Diabetes, Parkinsons etc.

Consumer Representative

A consumer representative is a committee member who voices the consumer perspective and takes part in the decision-making process on behalf of consumers.

Consumer participation

The process of involving health consumers in decision-making processes about their own health care, health service planning, policy development, and addressing quality issues in the delivery of health services.
